NEIGRIHMS Faculty Win Top Awards at International Pathology Conference in Bhutan

Shillong, May 8: Faculty members from the Department of Pathology at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong brought laurels to the institute after securing top honours at the 7th South Asian Academy of Cytopathology and Histopathology Conference held in Paro from April 21 to 23, 2026.

According to a press release, Dr. Biswajit Dey, Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, won the First Prize in the Oral Paper Presentation category for his research titled “Clinicopathological profile and molecular classification of muscle invasive bladder cancer based on a simplified panel of immunohistochemistry.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Naveen Kumar, Assistant Professor in the same department, secured the Second Prize in the Oral Paper Presentation category for his study on “Molecular profiling and clinicopathological association of endometrial carcinomas presenting at a tertiary care institute of Northeast India.”

The institute stated that both award-winning studies form part of ongoing research initiatives at NEIGRIHMS focusing on molecular profiling of cancers prevalent in Northeast India. The studies highlighted the increasing role of molecular pathology and immunohistochemistry in improving cancer classification, prognostication and personalised treatment strategies.

Director of NEIGRIHMS, Prof. Nalin Mehta congratulated the faculty members for their achievements at the international forum and said the recognition reflects the institute’s commitment towards advancing cancer research, molecular studies and academic excellence.

He further stated that such accomplishments strengthen NEIGRIHMS’ academic presence and contribution in South Asian countries.

The awardees also expressed gratitude to Sr. Prof. Vandana Raphael for her guidance, encouragement and support in providing a conducive academic and research environment for the successful completion of the studies.
