Shillong, May 8: The Meghalaya Transport Department has issued a public notice directing all vehicle owners and operators in the state to ensure mandatory compliance with High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) and statutory vehicle documents, warning of strict enforcement and legal action against violators.
The notice, issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Transport, Meghalaya, stated that many vehicles are still plying without proper number plates affixed on both the front and rear sides, while several others do not have High Security Registration Plates despite being registered vehicles.
The department said such violations are against the directives of the Supreme Court as well as Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, which mandates the installation of HSRP on all motor vehicles.
Authorities also observed that some heavy goods vehicles operating in border areas and outskirts of the state were frequently found without proper HSRP plates and lacking valid statutory documents.
The Transport Department instructed all vehicle owners and operators to ensure that vehicles have HSRP affixed on both the front and rear sides in accordance with legal provisions.
Additionally, vehicle owners have been directed to carry valid Certificates of Fitness, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, Registration Certificates (RC), insurance documents, valid road tax records and valid driving licences, along with any other documents required under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The department warned that a strict enforcement drive would be carried out across the state, particularly in border areas and vulnerable routes.
It further stated that violations could lead to seizure and detention of vehicles, imposition of heavy penalties and imprisonment wherever applicable under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
