SDRF Recovers Body From Abandoned Coal Mine in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong, May 10: A joint rescue and recovery operation was conducted on Sunday after a body was discovered inside an abandoned coal mine at Mulaibri sumer village under Mooriap Border Outpost in East Jaintia Hills district.

According to an official press release, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched the operation immediately after receiving information about the presence of a body inside the abandoned mine on Saturday evening.

The SDRF team, led by Sub-Inspector D. Kharbhih, departed from the headquarters at around 5:30 am and reached the incident site at approximately 10:30 am, following which rescue and recovery operations were initiated.

With assistance from the Quick Response Team (QRT) of Civil Defence, Khliehriat, three SDRF personnel — G/M F. Shangrit, G/M A. Dhar and G/M M. Chyrmang — descended into the abandoned mine using a crane support system to retrieve the floating body.

The operation was successfully completed at around 11:15 am when the team recovered the body of an unidentified male believed to be between 30 and 40 years of age.

Following the recovery, the body was handed over to police authorities for necessary legal formalities and further investigation.

The SDRF appreciated the coordinated efforts of all personnel involved in the operation and reiterated its commitment towards prompt emergency response and public safety.
