Shillong LS Bypoll to be Held Within Six Months, Rajya Sabha Poll Likely in June: Meghalaya CEO

Shillong, May 12: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Dr. BDR Tiwari on Tuesday said the byelection to the vacant Shillong Lok Sabha seat will be conducted within six months from the demise of the sitting Member of Parliament, adding that the election machinery in the state is fully prepared for the exercise.

Speaking to reporters, Tiwari said, “As per the mandate, the byelection is supposed to happen within six months of the demise of the sitting late MP of Shillong parliamentary constituency.” “We are fully prepared to conduct the byelection,” he added.

The Shillong parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of VPP MP Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon on February 19, 2026. Political parties have already begun preparations for the upcoming electoral battle. The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has named KAS president Dr. DRL Nonglait as its candidate, while the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) will field Prof. Batskhem Myrboh.

Meanwhile, on the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election from Meghalaya, the Chief Electoral Officer indicated that the poll is expected to take place before the seat officially becomes vacant. “As per the schedule given, very soon before the seat is getting vacant, I hope somewhere in the month of June,” Tiwari said.
