Shillong, May 12: The office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has issued an order permitting movement of commercial vehicles through the newly completed Umiam Bridge bypass from May 14, 2026, following its inauguration scheduled on May 13.
According to the order, all types of commercial vehicles, including night super buses travelling from Umiam towards Shillong, will be allowed to use the bypass subject to specific conditions.
The order stated that commercial vehicles and night buses will only be permitted to ply on the bypass between 9:00 pm and 7:00 am daily.
Authorities also clarified that articulated vehicles will not be allowed on the road. Only rigid vehicles with up to three axles, consisting of two tyres in the front axle and eight tyres in two tandem rear axles, with a maximum gross weight of 28.5 tonnes, will be permitted.
Further, all night super buses have been directed to mandatorily park at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Mawiong. Parking of such buses will not be allowed at SRGT, Polo, Shillong Municipal Board parking lot at Dhankheti, along Itshyrwat–New Shillong Road, Shillong–Jowai Road or any other location within Shillong city except ISBT Mawiong.
The Deputy Commissioner has also directed the police and relevant authorities to ensure enforcement of the restrictions and deployment of adequate traffic personnel at important junctions round the clock.
