Education Minister Inaugurates SPS Tynrai Football Arena in Shillong

Shillong, May 14: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday inaugurated the newly renovated SPS Tynrai Football Arena at the premises of Shillong Public School, Laitumkhrah, in partnership with Tynrai Academy.

Addressing students and officials during the programme, Rymbui encouraged students to actively pursue sports alongside academics, stating that sports play a major role in shaping the personality and skills of young people.

He advised students to remain focused on their goals and prepare proper plans to achieve them.

The minister also described Shillong Public School as one of the most sought-after educational institutions in the city and credited the school’s faculty and academic environment for shaping students’ minds and future prospects.

Rymbui reminded students that the building once served as the office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills and had historical significance, with many IAS officers having worked there in the past.

He encouraged students to aspire towards civil services and other achievements while making full use of the new sports infrastructure to develop both physical and mental abilities.

Speaking on the importance of sports, the minister said sports should not be viewed merely as a hobby and highlighted that the Meghalaya government has assured government jobs to medal winners representing the country at national and international events including the Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

Referring to neighbouring Manipur, Rymbui said Meghalaya too has the potential to produce Olympians and internationally recognised athletes.

He cited the example of Matsiewdor War, who represented India at the Asian Games, and urged students to believe in themselves and work hard towards achieving their goals.

The minister further stated that Meghalaya has many opportunities for employment and growth, adding that people from outside the state continue to come to Meghalaya because of the opportunities available.

Director of School Education and Literacy Banteilang Kharshandi said maintaining a healthy balance between sports and academics is essential for students.

He informed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Education Department and Sports Department was signed in February and the football arena project was completed within three months.

Kharshandi expressed hope that similar initiatives would be expanded to schools and districts across Meghalaya to promote sports development in the state.

Following the inauguration ceremony, a friendly football match was organised between officials of the Directorate of School Education and Literacy and students of Shillong Public School to promote sportsmanship and community participation.
