Khliehriat, June 1: A Special Court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in East Jaintia Hills District has convicted a man and sentenced him to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a child sexual abuse case registered in 2019.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, the case was registered at Khliehriat Women Police Station as Khliehriat Women PS Case No. 23(07)2019 under Section 3(a)/4 of the POCSO Act. The investigation was conducted by Woman Police Sub-Inspector S. Kharsati.
The accused, identified as Rephius Thamar, was arrested during the course of the investigation. Following completion of the probe, the investigating officer filed Charge Sheet No. 10/2020 dated August 18, 2020, before the court.
After the completion of the trial, the Court of B. Khriam, Special Judge (POCSO), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, found the accused guilty under the provisions of the POCSO Act and convicted him accordingly.
The court, through its order dated May 6, 2026, sentenced Rephius Thamar to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 15 years and imposed a fine of ₹50,000.
The East Jaintia Hills Police stated that the conviction reflects the commitment of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in ensuring justice for child victims of sexual offences and in dealing sternly with crimes against children.
