New Delhi, June 01: Two young women from Barato, Meghalaya, were rescued with the intervention of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) Delhi Unit after they allegedly faced exploitation following promises of employment in the national capital.
According to information received by the KSU Delhi Unit on May 31, the two girls claimed that they had been brought to Delhi by a woman who assured them of jobs in a hotel. However, after arriving in the city, the girls alleged that they were pressured to engage in prostitution.
The girls further alleged that when they refused to comply, the woman demanded repayment of the travel expenses incurred on their behalf and confiscated their mobile phones. They claimed that they were not being allowed to leave until the money spent on their travel was reimbursed.
Upon receiving the distress call, the KSU Delhi Unit immediately contacted the Delhi Police and sought urgent intervention. Acting swiftly, the police located the woman and detained her for questioning.
During the inquiry, the woman denied all allegations. She maintained that the girls had voluntarily travelled to Delhi in search of employment and stated that she had covered their travel expenses to assist them in securing jobs. She also denied any involvement in forcing or attempting to force the girls into prostitution.
Following police intervention, the woman was directed to return the mobile phones belonging to the two girls. The girls were subsequently handed over safely to the custody and care of the KSU Delhi Unit.
At present, both young women remain under the protection of the KSU Delhi Unit. Arrangements have been made for their safe return to Meghalaya. Family members of one of the girls have already sent the necessary funds for her airfare, and she is scheduled to return home on Monday.
The KSU Delhi Unit reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of students and youth from Meghalaya residing or travelling outside the state. The Union also urged job seekers to exercise caution when accepting employment offers from unknown individuals and to verify the authenticity of job opportunities before travelling.
