Meghalaya Assembly Environment Committee Marks World Environment Day with Tree Plantation Drive

Shillong, June 5: The Committee on Environment of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Thursday observed World Environment Day by undertaking a tree plantation drive at the Assembly premises in Khyndailad, Shillong, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The programme was led by Committee Chairman and Cabinet Minister Rakkam A. Sangma and attended by committee members Ollan Singh Suin, MLA from Mawsynram; Arbinstone B. Marak, MLA from Selsella; and Nujorki Sungoh, MLA from Mowkaiaw. Officers of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat and officials from the Social Forestry Department also participated in the event.

The programme began with a welcome address by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma, followed by the plantation of around 30 tree saplings within the Assembly campus as part of efforts to promote a greener and more sustainable environment.

Speaking to reporters after the programme, Rakkam A. Sangma stressed that environmental protection is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to actively participate in tree plantation and conservation activities for the benefit of future generations.

He expressed concern over the growing impact of climate change in Meghalaya, pointing to rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity and declining rainfall as major challenges facing the state.

The chairman said greater public awareness and community participation are essential to addressing environmental concerns and ensuring sustainable development.

He also stated that the Committee on Environment would continue to take up issues relating to environmental protection and sustainable development in the interest of the people while acknowledging the various initiatives undertaken by the State Government to conserve and protect the environment.

Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma said the observance of World Environment Day should extend beyond symbolic tree planting and focus on the long-term care and survival of saplings.

“We will not only plant trees but also ensure that the saplings are nurtured and cared for so that they grow and contribute to the greenery and environmental well-being of our State. Planting a tree is only the beginning; our responsibility is to ensure that it survives and flourishes,” he said.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Andrew Simons, Adviser (Legislation) to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
