Boulder Falls on Laitlyngkot–Lyngkyrdem Road, Damages Vehicle; Occupants Escape Unhurt

Shillong, June 10: A major tragedy was averted after a large boulder rolled down a hillside and struck a vehicle on the Laitlyngkot–Lyngkyrdem stretch of the Shillong–Dawki road on Tuesday morning, damaging the vehicle but leaving all occupants unharmed.

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 11:00 am near Laitmawiong village when a huge rock dislodged from the hillside and crashed into a vehicle bearing registration number BRO-1KC 3563.

Sources said the continuous rainfall since morning had loosened soil and rocks in the area, leading to the rockfall. The affected stretch is currently undergoing widening and construction works as part of the Shillong–Dawki road project and has witnessed frequent incidents of landslides and falling rocks.

The vehicle sustained damage in the incident, but fortunately all passengers escaped without injuries.

Meanwhile, the Pynursla Civil Sub-Division has already issued a public notice restricting vehicular movement along the Laitlyngkot–Lyngkyrdem road from June 11 due to ongoing excavation and hill-cutting works being carried out on the stretch.

Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution while travelling through the area, especially during the monsoon season, as the risk of landslides and rockfalls remains high.
