KSU Laban Circle seeks action over alleged Muharram procession violations

Shillong, June 30: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle has urged the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district to take appropriate action against the organisers of the recent Muharram procession in Laban, alleging that the event violated official guidelines, disrupted public peace and traffic, and posed safety risks to residents and commuters.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday, the KSU Laban Circle said it had received several complaints from residents regarding the Muharram processions held on June 25 and 26 across Laban, Lower Lumparing and adjoining areas.

According to the Union, the processions travelled from Red Cross, Laban to St. John area in Lower Lumparing and back on June 25, while on June 26 the procession reportedly moved from Red Cross, Laban to Civil Hospital Junction before passing through Oxford Hill, K.O.R., Last Stop and Rhino Point and returning to its starting point.

The Union alleged that although the district administration had directed that the processions conclude by 9.30 pm, they continued until around 11 pm, thereby violating the conditions laid down by the authorities.

It further claimed that students residing in the Dorbar Shnong areas of Laban, K.O.R. and Lower Lumparing complained that loud drumming and chanting during the late hours affected their preparation for ongoing mid-term examinations.

The KSU also raised concerns over alleged street performances involving swords and fire displays during the procession. According to the memorandum, these activities posed a serious safety risk, with reports claiming that some passers-by were struck by flying fire sparks.

The Union further alleged that the procession caused major traffic disruptions along the narrow roads in the affected localities. It stated that the procession reportedly halted every 50 to 80 metres for sword demonstrations and fire performances, leading to prolonged traffic congestion and allegedly obstructing the movement of emergency vehicles, including ambulances, particularly along the highway route.

While reiterating its respect for every religion and every individual’s right to practise their faith, the KSU Laban Circle stated that it could not support any activity that adversely affects public peace, tranquillity, safety and security.

The Union has appealed to the district administration to take necessary action against the organisers and ensure that future public processions are conducted strictly in accordance with the law and the conditions prescribed by the authorities.
