Shillong, July 6: Police have launched an inquiry into viral allegations circulating on social media against a young man from Shillong, despite no formal complaint being filed by any of the alleged victims.
The man’s photograph has been widely shared across various social media platforms, accompanied by allegations that he sexually exploited several young women over the years. Some of the posts further claim that a number of the alleged victims were threatened with the release of their private videos to intimidate them.
One of the viral posts also alleged that one of the victims became pregnant and urged the public to spread awareness about the case to help secure justice for others who may have been affected.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said on Monday that the police were aware of the viral posts and had initiated a detailed inquiry into the matter.
The SP said police had seen the photograph of the alleged accused circulating on social media. However, he added that the woman who shared the allegations has not come forward to lodge a First Information Report (FIR).
Police said the inquiry is continuing, even though no FIR has been registered so far due to the absence of a formal complaint from any of the alleged victims.
