Shillong, July 14: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday reviewed the progress of several flagship infrastructure projects under construction in New Shillong, reiterating the Meghalaya Government’s commitment to developing modern infrastructure that will strengthen governance, improve public services and support the state’s long-term growth.
The review meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, senior government officials and representatives of the executing agencies.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister visited the New Secretariat Complex, Unity Mall, the Sports Complex at Umsawli, and other ongoing development projects in the New Shillong Township.
Reviewing the construction of the New Secretariat Complex, Sangma stressed the need to maintain the highest standards of quality while ensuring timely completion of the project. Once completed, the Secretariat will function as a modern administrative hub by bringing various government departments under one roof, thereby improving coordination, efficiency and citizen-centric governance.
The Chief Minister also inspected the progress of the Unity Mall, which is being developed to provide a dedicated platform for Meghalaya’s artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs, self-help groups and local producers to showcase and market their products. The project is expected to promote local enterprise, strengthen tourism and generate sustainable livelihood opportunities.
At the Sports Complex in Umsawli, Sangma reiterated the government’s focus on creating world-class sports infrastructure for the state’s youth. The complex will offer modern training and competition facilities aimed at nurturing sporting talent and further establishing Meghalaya as a major sporting destination in the region.
The Chief Minister was also briefed on the status of other infrastructure works underway in the New Shillong Township. During the review, he directed all executing agencies to strengthen coordination, maintain strict quality standards and expedite construction while adhering to prescribed timelines and safety norms.
Speaking during the visit, Sangma said the projects being developed in New Shillong are laying the foundation for Meghalaya’s future. He noted that investments in modern administrative, commercial and sports infrastructure would not only improve governance and public service delivery but also create employment, generate economic opportunities and enhance the quality of life of the people.
The Meghalaya Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the timely completion of these transformative projects so that citizens can benefit from modern, efficient and sustainable infrastructure at the earliest.
