Shillong, July 21: Street vendors from across the Laitumkhrah area on Tuesday refused to shift to the designated vending site at Brightwell Bungalow in Barik Point, stating that the location was unsuitable as it is surrounded by a forested area and is far from potential customers.
Speaking to the media, Vice President of the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) Discipline Synnah, said the street vendors of Laitumkhrah have demanded that they be relocated to Iew Shyllong, which is located in Laitumkhrah itself.
She said the arrangement should be similar to the relocation of street vendors in Police Bazar and Civil Hospital, Shillong, where vendors have been accommodated at designated locations closer to their areas of operation.
The street vendors also questioned the government’s decision to relocate some vendors to Dhankheti and others to Barik Point, stating that they wanted all the vendors to be accommodated in one location, as was done for vendors in the past.
The vendors warned that they may launch a protest if their demands are not addressed and urged the authorities to reconsider the proposed relocation to Brightwell Bungalow.
