Shillong, July 27: Two teenagers were killed after the scooter they were travelling on was struck by an unidentified vehicle at Golflink late Sunday night, prompting police to launch a search for the vehicle and its driver. The deceased were identified as Benjamin Shabong, 18, and Fabela Grace, 17. Police said one of the victims was from Mawpun, while the other was from Pynthor.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the victims were rushed to Shillong Civil Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. According to the SP, police personnel from Pasteur Beat House and Sadar Traffic Police reached the accident site within five minutes of receiving the information.
A case has been registered, and investigators are examining available evidence to identify the vehicle involved. Police said the driver would be arrested after the vehicle is traced.
The post-mortem examination is also expected to help investigators establish relevant circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether alcohol consumption or other factors were involved. Traffic Police will conduct a parallel investigation to determine responsibility.
Syiem said the driver should have stopped at the scene and surrendered before the police. The fact that the driver fled after the collision indicated possible fault, he added.
Cases have been registered against both the unidentified driver and the offending vehicle, while further investigation is underway.
