Shillong, August 26: A Hyundai i10 belonging to an Assam Police personnel was found in a dilapidated condition after reportedly being engulfed by fire at Mawsikar village, near an Assam police camp in the Langpih area of West Khasi Hills, early Wednesday morning.
West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert Kharkongor said information about the incident was received at around 7 am at the Langpih Border Out Post (BOP) from the headman of Mawsikar village.
Following the information, police immediately visited the site and conducted a preliminary inquiry involving the village headman, secretary and other village elders.
The vehicle, bearing registration number AS 01 DH 7347, was reportedly parked along the roadside a few metres from the Assam police camp.
Preliminary inquiries indicated that the fire may have occurred at around 4 am on Wednesday, although the exact time and circumstances remain unclear.
Kharkongor said the cause of the fire has not yet been established. Police conducted a detailed inspection of the site but did not find any suspicious objects or materials indicating deliberate or criminal activity.
The Assam Police has also initiated necessary action from its end. However, no FIR or formal complaint from the vehicle owner had been received at the Langpih BOP at the time of reporting.
Police said the situation in the area remains normal and peaceful, while further details are awaited as the inquiry continues.
