Shillong, September 1: Shillong Lajong FC continued their unbeaten run in the Shillong Premier League 2026 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Meghalaya Police at the SSA Stadium here on Tuesday.
Ricky Kharkongor opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Lalmuansanga doubled the lead in the 54th minute, handing Meghalaya Police their first defeat of the season.
Both teams had entered the match with identical records of two wins and one draw, but Lajong proved sharper in attack and repeatedly troubled the Police defence with their pace.
Lajong created several chances in the opening stages, with Freddy Jyrwa and Lalmuansanga testing the opposition defence. Galbraith Laitmon also sent a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar.
Meghalaya Police goalkeeper Eveningstar Bareh then made a crucial save with his foot to deny Lalmuansanga, but Lajong broke the deadlock just two minutes later.
Lalmuansanga, operating from the left, delivered a cross into the box which Ricky volleyed into the net in the 39th minute. Ricky, however, sustained an injury while scoring and was substituted at half-time.
Meghalaya Police had limited opportunities in the opening half, with Aldrin Ramsiej sending one of their few clear chances wide.
The Police side started the second half with an opportunity from a free-kick near the edge of the penalty area, but Bikram Chettri sent his effort high over the goal.
Lajong extended their lead soon afterwards following a defensive mistake. A misplaced back pass allowed Lalmuansanga to regain possession before he rounded the advancing Eveningstar and calmly guided the ball into the net in the 54th minute.
Lalmuansanga had further opportunities to increase the margin but failed to convert. He later had a penalty saved after Bikram conceded a foul inside the box, with Eveningstar diving sharply to his right to deny the Lajong forward.
Lajong continued to press until the final whistle, with Fridison Wanniang striking the crossbar with a powerful effort.
Meghalaya Police also came close late in the match when Pynshailang L. Lyngkhoi headed a Rapborlang Marwein free-kick over the bar.
The result means Shillong Lajong remain the only team yet to concede a goal in the Shillong Premier League 2026.
Lajong also became the first team to reach 10 points and moved to the top of the provisional standings, while Meghalaya Police dropped from second to fourth position and remain on seven points.
The SPL 2026 will continue with a double-header on Wednesday. Laitkor will face Langsning at 1 pm in a match that was postponed from August 28 due to severe weather, while Nongkseh will take on Mawlai at 5 pm.
