Shillong, September 8: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Meghalaya, on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), 2026, with district election officials and representatives of recognised political parties.
The review covered notice generation and delivery, hearings, claims and objections, No Mapping and mapping discrepancy cases, appointment of Booth Level Agents and other activities connected with the revision of electoral rolls.
According to the Election Department, the Draft Electoral Roll contains 21,69,243 electors. A total of 6,51,735 notices have been generated, of which 6,20,730 have been delivered, while 31,005 notices are still pending delivery.
The CEO directed District Election Officers and Electoral Registration Officers to expedite delivery of the remaining notices and ensure that electors are given adequate opportunity to attend hearings and submit the required supporting documents.
As per the latest figures, 2,08,870 hearings have been conducted across the State, representing 32.05 per cent of the notices generated. So far, 384 electors have been found ineligible following scrutiny and the prescribed hearing process.
The CEO clarified that receiving a notice does not automatically mean deletion from the electoral roll. The notice provides electors an opportunity to explain discrepancies and produce supporting documents.
Election officials have been directed not to delete any name from the Draft Electoral Roll without due process, including issuance of notice, inquiry and a fair opportunity of hearing.
Of the total electors in the Draft Electoral Roll, 2,22,786 have been identified under the “No Mapping” category, while 4,28,949 have mapping discrepancies. In all, 6,51,735 electors have been identified for scrutiny and appropriate action.
The review also found that 12,951 applications have been received after publication of the Draft Electoral Roll. These include 6,804 Form 6 applications for inclusion, 738 Form 7 applications, 982 Form 8 applications for shifting and 4,427 Form 8 applications for correction.
Meanwhile, political parties have appointed 1,814 Booth Level Agents across Meghalaya. Of these, the NPP has appointed 736 BLAs, BJP 393, VPP 320, Congress 186, UDP 121 and AITC 58.
Political parties and their BLAs have been asked to continue assisting electors in checking their electoral status, responding to notices, attending hearings and filing claims and objections wherever necessary.
The Election Department also reiterated that the SIR schedule has been extended by 14 days following disruptions to the claims, objections and hearing process in Shillong last month.
Under the revised schedule, September 18 is the last date for filing claims and objections, October 17 for disposal of claims and objections and completion of hearings, while the final Electoral Roll will be published on October 21.
Electors whose names are not included in the Draft Electoral Roll have been advised to submit Form 6 along with the prescribed declaration and supporting documents by September 18.
Those whose names are already in the Draft Electoral Roll and mapped with SIR 2005 do not need to take further action. However, electors under the No Mapping category or with mapping discrepancies who receive notices have been urged to attend their scheduled hearings and submit the necessary documents.
The CEO also appealed to political parties, Booth Level Agents, traditional institutions, Dorbar Shnongs, Nokmas, civil society organisations and the media to continue assisting electors during the revision exercise.
