Shillong, September 22: Sadar Police Station on Tuesday questioned Eladwanmi Papang, a member of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shangpung Unit, after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) reportedly found that his Scooty had allegedly been used during the black-flag rally organised by the KSU in Shillong on August 19. The rally was followed by incidents of violence and damage at different locations across the city.
Speaking to the media after leaving Sadar Police Station, Papang said police personnel stopped him near BK Bajoria School in Shillong and subsequently took him to the police station for questioning. He said police questioned him about the identity of the person who had been riding his Scooty during the rally. “The police asked me who was riding the Scooty. I told them that I did not know who was riding it, but I knew my brother who was sitting behind the rider. That is why they called me to the police station,” Papang said. He further claimed that police had seized his Scooty from Jowai on Monday.
Papang said he was currently unaware of his brother’s whereabouts and had been unable to contact him despite making several phone calls. Confirming that he is a member of the KSU Shangpung Unit, Papang maintained that he did not participate in the August 19 rally. He said he works as a local taxi driver and was occupied with picking up schoolchildren after school hours on the day of the rally.
The questioning comes as the SIT continues its investigation into the August 19 black-flag rally and the incidents that followed in different parts of Shillong.
