Shillong, September 29: Pateng, a Khasi folk band from Meghalaya, secured the 1st Runner-Up position at the Toyota North East Star 2026 competition held in Guwahati, Assam, on September 27. The event brought together participants from all eight Northeastern states, with more than 300 contestants taking part.
Representing Meghalaya, Pateng showcased Khasi folk music and traditional instruments, highlighting the musical heritage and cultural identity of the Khasi community. The band comprises Marvelyne Kshiar as vocalist, Jenny Khyriemmujat on Ksing, Babetlari Kharbyngar on Bom, Bateiskhembor Mawthoh on Besli, Costerfield Kshiar on Duitara, and Mark Anthony on guitar.
Apart from finishing as the first runner-up, Pateng also emerged as the winner of the Toyota MOGO Challenge, adding another achievement to the band’s performance at the competition. The recognition at North East Star 2026 marks a significant achievement for the young musicians and provides a wider platform for Khasi folk music and traditional cultural expression.
