Shillong, September 29: The MIT School of Nursing, MIT University of Meghalaya, organised a Lamp Lighting and Oath-Taking Ceremony for its second batch of General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students at the university campus on Tuesday.
The ceremony, held under the theme “Illuminating Humanity: The Beginning of a Lifelong Commitment to Care,” marked an important milestone in the students’ journey into the nursing profession. The event highlighted the values of knowledge, compassion, responsibility and service to humanity. During the lamp-lighting ceremony, students symbolically pledged to carry forward the light of knowledge, hope and compassion in their professional lives. This was followed by the oath-taking ceremony, during which they committed themselves to providing ethical, competent and compassionate care to patients, families and communities.
Addressing the gathering, MIT University of Meghalaya Pro Vice Chancellor and Registrar Dr. Debmalya Bhattacharya urged the students to approach the healthcare profession with humility, discipline and a strong sense of purpose. He said nursing goes beyond clinical knowledge and technical skills and requires empathy, patience, courage and commitment to the wellbeing of others. He also encouraged the students to remain lifelong learners and continuously develop themselves professionally and personally.
The programme was attended by MIT School of Nursing Principal Malynda Marbaniang, Vice Principal Elgina Darilang Shabong, Deans and Heads of various schools, faculty members, staff, students, parents, guardians and invited guests. The university said the ceremony marked the formal beginning of another chapter in the students’ journey towards becoming responsible and compassionate healthcare professionals.
