ECI Introduces Doorstep Help for Electors Under SIR; Meghalaya Final Roll Publication Extended to Oct 26

Shillong, October 1: More than 93 per cent of notice cases issued under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), 2026, have been completed in Meghalaya, even as the Election Commission of India (ECI) introduced new voter-friendly measures, including doorstep collection of documents by Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

According to a press note issued by the Meghalaya Election Department on Thursday, BLOs will visit the homes of electors who have received notices for being unmapped or for having logical discrepancies. They will collect the required documents and upload them on ECINet for a decision by the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). Such electors will normally not be required to visit the ERO or AERO office for a hearing.

A hearing will be required only in exceptional circumstances as decided by the ERO and will preferably be conducted online. Electors may also authorise an adult member of their family to attend the hearing on their behalf.

District Election Officers have also been directed to set up Help Desks and organise Special Camps, wherever required, to assist people living in night shelters, labourers, economically disadvantaged persons, homeless persons and others needing assistance.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, has directed all DEOs, EROs, AEROs and BLOs to ensure effective implementation of the facilitation measures and provide adequate opportunity to every concerned elector during the revision process.

The Election Commission has also extended the date for final publication of the Electoral Roll in Meghalaya to October 26, 2026.

As of October 1, Meghalaya had completed 6,06,939 of the 6,51,735 notice cases generated under the SIR, representing 93.13 per cent. The Draft Electoral Roll contains 21,69,243 electors, of whom 6,51,735 were issued notices. These include 2,22,786 no-mapping cases and 4,28,949 cases involving mapping discrepancies.

So far, 1,194 electors have been found ineligible for inclusion in the Final Electoral Roll after completion of the prescribed process, while 19,71,723 electors have been parked for final publication.

During the revision exercise, 23,259 forms were also received and digitised, comprising 12,624 Form 6 applications, 1,616 Form 7 applications, 1,590 Form 8 applications for shifting and 7,429 Form 8 applications for corrections. Political parties have appointed 1,814 Booth Level Agents across Meghalaya to participate in the revision process.

The Election Department has urged electors who have received notices to cooperate with their BLOs and furnish the required documents when contacted. Voters have also been advised to verify their names in the Final Electoral Roll after its publication.
