KSU Vice-President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet Granted 20-Day Interim Bail, Released from Shillong Jail

Shillong, October 6: A Shillong court on Tuesday granted 20 days’ interim bail to Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Vice-President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, who had been in judicial custody for nearly 48 days in connection with incidents surrounding the KSU black-flag rally held in Shillong on August 19. Following his release from Shillong District Jail, Sanmiet was received by KSU leaders and members, as well as his family.

Speaking to the media after his release, Sanmiet said the manner in which he would utilise the 20-day interim bail period would largely depend on medical advice, as he requires treatment for health-related issues. He said he had undergone treatment at Bethany Hospital in Shillong in July 2026 and was discharged after a few days. According to Sanmiet, a follow-up medical examination two weeks later indicated health problems and he was advised to undergo surgery within six weeks.

However, he said the surgery could not be carried out as he was arrested during that period. “Now that I have received 20 days’ interim bail, I will be able to undergo treatment,” Sanmiet said.

He said he has been experiencing nosebleeds, high blood pressure, migraine, headaches and breathing difficulties while sleeping. Sanmiet also thanked the doctors at Shillong District Jail for their cooperation and assistance during his time in custody.

Meanwhile, KSU General Secretary Reuben A. Najiar had earlier been granted 14 days’ interim bail following a bereavement in his family. Najiar returned to jail on October 1 after the interim bail period expired.
