31-Year-Old Man Arrested in Connection with Woman’s Death in Eastern West Khasi Hills

Mairang, October 8: Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the death of a woman identified as Sperly Syngkli of Umkaduh village in Ri-Bhoi district, under circumstances that are currently being investigated.

According to a statement issued by the Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills, Mairang Police Station registered Case No. 66(10)2026 under Sections 103(1) and 238(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, on October 7, following a written FIR concerning the woman’s death.

Police said Syngkli had left her residence at Umkaduh on October 3 and travelled to Maroid village in Eastern West Khasi Hills to stay with her husband. However, in the early hours of October 6, she was reportedly found unresponsive. After being informed of the incident, her relatives rushed to Maroid village and subsequently brought her body back to Umkaduh.

The circumstances surrounding her death were later reported to Nongpoh Police Station, following which the body was sent to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, for a post-mortem examination. Police confirmed that the examination has been conducted, but the post-mortem report is still awaited. As part of the investigation, police, assisted by the Crime Scene Unit, examined the scene of occurrence and collected relevant material evidence for further examination.

During the course of the investigation, police took into custody and subsequently arrested Kursur L. Mawlong (31), son of late Phlan Wahlang, a resident of Maroid village, in connection with the case. Police said further investigation is underway and necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings. The exact cause of Syngkli’s death remains undetermined pending the post-mortem report.
