Shillong, October 8: East Khasi Hills Police have arrested two persons in connection with the theft of a Royal Enfield motorcycle from Riatsamthiah, Shillong, with investigations revealing a suspected network involved in smuggling stolen motorcycles to Bangladesh.
According to a press release issued by Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Dr. Hari Prasanth M.R., IPS, a complaint was received at Lumdiengjri Police Station on October 4 regarding the theft of a graphite grey Royal Enfield Hunter 350, bearing registration number ML-05-AF-7596, from Riatsamthiah Block-II.
Following the complaint, police registered Lumdiengjri Police Station Case No. 136/2026 under Section 305(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation. During the investigation, police gathered evidence that led to the apprehension of Shabamutlang Syiemlieh (23), a resident of Mawpun, Golflink, Shillong, on October 7.
Police said that during interrogation, Syiemlieh disclosed the alleged involvement of the principal accused, identified as Cornelius Mukhim (20), a resident of Mawlai Mawroh, Shillong. Acting on the information and further investigation, police subsequently arrested Mukhim in connection with the case.
According to the police statement, both accused disclosed during interrogation that stolen motorcycles were being smuggled to Bangladesh, raising concerns over a possible larger vehicle theft and cross-border smuggling network.
Police said further investigation is underway to identify other individuals allegedly involved in the illegal activities and uncover the wider network behind the suspected smuggling operations. The police have not yet disclosed whether the stolen Royal Enfield motorcycle has been recovered.
Authorities said investigations are continuing to establish the full extent of the suspected network and identify other persons involved.
