KSU Seeks Urban Affairs Clarification on Place of Worship Construction at CBI Office Premises in Mawdiangdiang

Shillong, October 12: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Shillong Mihngi Circle, has sought a detailed clarification from the Meghalaya Urban Affairs Department over the construction of a place of worship within the premises of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office at Mawdiangdiang.

In a letter addressed to the Director of Urban Affairs, the Union said it had earlier raised the matter during a meeting on August 11, 2026, when it was allegedly assured that the site would be inspected. The KSU said it has not received any detailed clarification so far regarding the status of the matter or the action taken by the department. The Union said it has concerns over whether the construction complies with the applicable rules, permissions and conditions governing the use of the land. It also pointed out that leaders of the KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle had been summoned by police in connection with the issue.

According to the KSU, information available to it indicates that the land-use agreement permits construction of facilities such as residential and office complexes. The Union, however, claimed that a place of worship has also been constructed within the premises and said this raises questions regarding the permissions granted and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The KSU has asked the Urban Affairs Department to clarify whether it has inspected the site, what the findings were, and whether the construction has received the necessary approval under the relevant agreement and legal provisions. The Union also sought clarification on whether approval had been obtained from the concerned Dorbar Shnong and what steps the department intends to take if such approval was not secured.

It further asked what legal action would be taken if the construction is found to violate the terms of the agreement, permissions granted or applicable laws, and questioned why no detailed response had been provided despite the earlier assurance.

The KSU said its position is to oppose any construction that violates applicable agreements, permissions or laws and urged the department to conduct a thorough inquiry and take appropriate action if any violation is established.

The Union has sought a “detailed, clear and fact-based response” on the present status of the matter, the steps already taken and any further action proposed by the department. It also warned that in the absence of satisfactory clarification or action within a reasonable period, it may consider stronger but lawful measures to pursue the issue.
