Shillong, October 23: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has urged the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, to introduce a dedicated state-wise quota for eligible students from Meghalaya seeking admission to the B.Sc. Nursing course.

In a representation submitted to the Director of NEIGRIHMS, the Council expressed serious concern over the provisional admission list for the 2026–2027 academic session, notified on September 7, 2026, which included 48 candidates but not a single student from Meghalaya.

The HYC stated that while it respects the national character of NEIGRIHMS and the principle of merit-based admission, students from Meghalaya should be provided a fair and meaningful opportunity to pursue professional nursing education at the premier Central Government institution located in their own state.

The Council maintained that the absence of Meghalaya students from the provisional admission list raises concerns over access to professional education for local students.

In its representation, the HYC urged the NEIGRIHMS authorities to consider introducing a seat-allocation system similar to that followed by the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, and the reservation framework applicable to Meghalaya students seeking admission to the MBBS course at NEIGRIHMS.

The Council specifically requested that the matter be placed before the Governing Council meeting scheduled for October 27, 2026, for consideration and necessary amendments to the existing admission rules to facilitate the introduction of an appropriate state-wise quota.

According to the HYC, such a provision would not only improve access to professional nursing education for deserving students from Meghalaya but also contribute towards developing skilled healthcare personnel in the state.

The Council further expressed hope that NEIGRIHMS and the authorities concerned would give due consideration to its demand and initiate appropriate measures to ensure that deserving students from Meghalaya are not deprived of meaningful opportunities to pursue professional nursing education in their home state.

The HYC reiterated that its demand is aimed at ensuring fair access to educational opportunities for local students while respecting the merit-based admission system and the national character of the institution.
