Shillong, May 13: A delegation of the Meghalaya unit of Sanbor Shullai and BJP MLA A. L. Hek met Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar to discuss the ongoing administrative issues at North-Eastern Hill University.
During the meeting, the delegation informed the Union Minister about what it described as a complete breakdown of administration at the university due to the prolonged absence of the Vice Chancellor from the NEHU headquarters.
The BJP leaders raised concerns over several issues affecting the institution, including shortage of staff, deterioration in amenities, lack of proper administrative guidance, and growing grievances among stakeholders.
According to the delegation, the prevailing situation has adversely affected students and disrupted the smooth functioning of the university, which is regarded as one of the premier educational institutions in the Northeast.
The delegation urged the Ministry of Education to intervene at the earliest to restore normalcy and ensure efficient administration at the university.
The BJP Meghalaya leaders also stressed the importance of appointing a new Vice Chancellor who has a deeper understanding of the local culture, traditions, and regional needs.
Responding to the concerns raised, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up immediately with the Union Education Minister, keeping in view the interests of students and the need to restore NEHU to optimal operational levels at the earliest.
