Centre Dismisses Reports of Fuel Price Hike as ‘Fake News’, Assures No Proposal Under Consideration

New Delhi, April 23 : The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has categorically denied reports claiming an impending hike in petrol and diesel prices, terming them “fake news” and misleading.

In an official clarification, the ministry stated that there is no proposal under consideration by the Government to increase fuel prices, countering widespread reports suggesting a possible hike of ₹25–28 per litre after the ongoing elections.

The ministry warned that such reports are aimed at creating unnecessary fear and panic among the public. “These news items are mischievous and misleading,” the statement said.

Refuting speculation, the Centre further highlighted that India is among the few countries where petrol and diesel prices have remained stable over the past four years, despite fluctuations in global crude oil markets.

It added that the Government of India, along with public sector oil companies, has taken consistent steps to shield consumers from sharp increases in international fuel prices.

The clarification comes amid viral social media posts and reports citing market analyses predicting a steep hike, which have now been dismissed by the government as baseless.
