New Pay Structure for 23,000 Teachers Implemented; Govt Aims to Ensure Dignity and Job Security: Rymbui

Shillong, April 23 : Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday announced that the state government has implemented a new pay structure for over 23,000 teachers with effect from April 1, with salaries likely to be released on May 1 or in the first week of May.

Speaking to reporters, Rymbui said the long-pending reform marks a significant step towards improving the condition of teachers in the state. “The new pay structure has already been implemented from April 1. We only need to release the salary on May 1 or the first week of the month,” he said.

Describing the move as a major achievement, the minister said previous governments had struggled to address the issue. “It was a challenging task, which is why successive governments could not resolve it. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, we have been able to implement it,” he added.

Rymbui emphasized that the reform goes beyond salary enhancement, focusing on dignity and job stability for teachers. “This is not just about pay. It is about giving dignity to the service rendered by teachers, ensuring stability and job security, and recognising their hard work,” he said.

On parity with government employees, the minister acknowledged limitations but assured gradual improvements. “We may not be able to match government salaries immediately, but we are making efforts and will continue reforms steadily with collective support,” he stated.

The minister also informed that the rationalisation of schools is currently underway and expressed optimism about the process, stressing the need for cooperation from all stakeholders.

Regarding verification of teacher data, Rymbui said the process is being carried out at district and sub-divisional levels by the District School Education Officers (DSEO) and Sub-Divisional School Education Officers (SDSEO).

Reiterating the government’s commitment, he said the implementation follows the assurance given on December 19, 2025, and aligns with the state’s priority to strengthen the education sector.
