CM Conrad Sangma Reviews Key Development Projects, Stresses Sustainable Urban Growth

Shillong, April 14: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday chaired a series of review meetings with various departments at the State Guest House, Taraghar, Shillong, focusing on ongoing development initiatives and future planning.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Commissioner & Secretary (Tourism) Vijay Kumar D., along with senior officials.

Urban infrastructure and redevelopment in Shillong were a major focus, with the Chief Minister emphasizing the need to maximize public value, economic activity, and long-term sustainability. He directed departments to adopt innovative models, including public-private partnerships, and to carefully evaluate concession options before committing public funds.

Highlighting the importance of efficient land use, Sangma said prime urban areas should be developed into vibrant commercial and public hubs. Discussions also covered land allocation for power-related infrastructure and coordinated planning to optimize resource utilization.

The Chief Minister stressed the need to improve last-mile connectivity, suggesting initial support measures to encourage public transport usage. Plans for developing public spaces such as parks, amphitheatres, and community zones were reviewed, along with the relocation of the Police Reserve to create new public-use areas. He underscored the importance of a holistic approach to urban development, integrating infrastructure, mobility, commerce, and public spaces.

The functioning of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation was also reviewed, with focus on strengthening urban mobility.

A separate review of the Forest and Environment Department emphasized better coordination, efficient use of resources, and time-bound implementation. Key areas discussed included wildlife conservation, mitigation of human-animal conflict, improved forest management, and stricter action against illegal activities such as mining and smuggling. The Chief Minister also encouraged the promotion of eco-tourism through professional management and partnerships.

The meeting further examined a proposal with the Department of Arts & Culture and research groups from Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities to undertake a structured study of their history, culture, and origins.

A proposal to develop the agarwood and essential oils sector was also reviewed, with plans for a Centre of Excellence to boost cultivation, processing, and export, aimed at enhancing farmer income and employment opportunities.

Preparations for the National Games 2027 were assessed, with emphasis on timely completion of infrastructure and quality arrangements for athletes. It was informed that over 1,200 athletes are currently undergoing training, with improved performances noted in recent competitions.

Cleanliness, waste management, and urban improvement initiatives in Shillong were also discussed. The Chief Minister called for practical interventions, greater community participation, and youth engagement to promote civic responsibility.

He also highlighted plans for artist engagement initiatives to enhance public spaces and reviewed progress on bio-remediation at the Marten landfill site. Efforts are underway to strengthen waste collection systems beyond municipal areas.

The Chief Minister concluded by stressing the importance of convergence, continuous monitoring, and outcome-driven implementation to ensure tangible benefits for the people.
