Shillong, September 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday distributed the one-time relocation grant of ₹20,000 to vendors relocated to vending zones at Barik and Dhanketi. Minister for Arts & Culture and others, South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, East Shillong MLA Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh, and officials of the Urban Affairs Department were present during the distribution and interaction with the vendors.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said the relocation of vendors was possible due to the cooperation of all stakeholders involved in the process. He described the exercise as one of the most challenging undertaken by the government as it involved not only urban development and beautification but also the livelihoods of vendors. “Though it may look like a small and simple step, it is one of the most challenging situations that we have faced because it is not only about development but linked with the livelihood of the people and the overall beautification of the city,” he said.
The Chief Minister said prime locations had been allotted for vending zones to strike a balance between protecting the livelihoods of vendors and improving the aesthetics of the city, roads and streets. He also urged citizens and tourists to visit the vending zones, stating that the government plans to develop them into lively public spaces with facilities such as toilets, seating areas, decorative lighting and live performances in the evenings.
Under the one-time assistance scheme, vendors will receive immediate financial support of ₹10,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer, followed by ₹2,000 per month for the next five months, taking the total assistance to ₹20,000.
