Baghmara, January 20: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday held an extensive review meeting with district officials, community representatives, and stakeholders in Baghmara, addressing key issues related to healthcare, infrastructure, and local governance. The meeting, held at the Conference Hall of the Baghmara Circuit House, was attended by Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed and senior officers from various departments.
During the discussions, the Chief Minister took note of the shortage of specialist doctors and staff at the Baghmara Civil Hospital, which is currently being managed by only 11 medical officers against the required strength of 22, including specialists. Despite recent postings, no specialist doctors have reported for duty so far, leading to an absence of critical medical services.
Officials also highlighted a shortage of nursing and biomedical staff, while assuring that upgradation work at the hospital is progressing steadily. The operation theatre and blood storage unit are now functional, and procedures such as caesarean sections and other surgeries are being successfully conducted.
A major initiative under review was the pilot project for a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at the hospital, which is expected to be completed within the next three to four weeks. Once operational, the STP will ensure proper disposal of sewage and chemical waste, helping to prevent recurring septic tank blockages and waterlogging. The Chief Minister noted that if the model proves successful, it could be replicated in other district hospitals across Meghalaya.
Directing officials to immediately address shortages in nursing and paramedical staff, the Chief Minister emphasised the need for efficient healthcare delivery in rural districts. He also reviewed issues related to water supply, ambulance availability, and post-operative care, instructing officers to ensure uninterrupted water access and undertake urgent repair and renovation works.
The meeting also discussed concerns regarding land compensation for pending projects. The Chief Minister assured that the matter will be taken up with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Regarding the Baghmara Stadium project, officials have been directed to resolve all land-related issues within this week to facilitate the commencement of work.
The review meeting reflected the government’s ongoing focus on grassroots-level problem-solving, with the Chief Minister reiterating his commitment to improving service delivery, infrastructure, and administrative responsiveness-in the South Garo Hills region.
