DDMA EKH; Warns of Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Till May 1

Shillong, April 27: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, has issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds across the district from April 27 to May 1.

According to the advisory issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall and gusty winds ranging between 40–60 kmph are expected during this period, based on forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The advisory states that from April 27 to April 30, the district is likely to experience thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, while similar conditions are expected to continue on May 1 with heavy rainfall and strong winds.

In view of the forecast, authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The public has been advised to secure loose objects such as tin sheets, bricks, signboards, and garbage bins to prevent damage during strong winds.

People have also been asked to switch off electrical appliances during lightning, avoid venturing near rivers, streams, waterfalls, and flooded areas, and refrain from driving through waterlogged roads due to the risk of flash floods and electrocution.

The DDMA further cautioned that fast-moving water currents can be deceptive and dangerous, urging citizens to remain vigilant, especially in low-lying and vulnerable areas.

Residents have been advised to dial 112 for emergency assistance and to remain alert throughout the period as adverse weather conditions persist.
