UNIQLO India, Avenues Meghalaya Launch Employability Drive; Over 160 Youth Certified in Shillong

Shillong, April 26: UNIQLO India Private Limited, in collaboration with Avenues Meghalaya, has successfully completed the inaugural batches of its Employability Accelerator Programme, aimed at enhancing job readiness and expanding employment opportunities for youth in the Northeast.

The certification event, held in Shillong on April 22, saw over 160 participants—including college students and unemployed youth from across the region—receive certificates after completing an intensive 80-hour training programme focused on workplace readiness and employability skills.

The programme, fully sponsored by UNIQLO, was designed to bridge the gap between education and employment by equipping participants with essential skills such as communication, confidence, teamwork, professional behaviour, and interview readiness.

Speaking at the event, Chief Guest Wailadmiki Shylla, Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs and Health & Family Welfare, emphasised the importance of discipline, continuous learning, and strong work ethics for success in today’s competitive workforce. He also highlighted various government initiatives aimed at youth development, including SKILLS Meghalaya and PRIME Meghalaya.

Guest of Honour and Padma Shri awardee Manas Chaudhuri underscored the need for integrity, responsibility, and attention to detail, drawing parallels with global work cultures such as that of Japan.

Senior officials from UNIQLO India reiterated their commitment to supporting youth development. Kenji Inoue, COO & CFO, said the initiative reflects the company’s belief in contributing to society beyond business, while Kaneko Yuichiro, COO, highlighted the organisation’s vision to grow alongside local communities by creating opportunities and nurturing talent.

Officials noted that while the Northeast has a strong base of educated youth, challenges such as limited industry exposure and lack of structured training opportunities continue to affect employability. The programme was introduced as a structured pathway to address these gaps.

Participants also shared positive feedback, citing improved confidence, communication skills, and readiness to face real-world job challenges after completing the training.

The event, held at Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong, brought together representatives from academic institutions, industry leaders, and programme partners. It also featured cultural performances showcasing the diversity of the Northeast.

Organisers said the initiative marks the beginning of a broader effort to build a skilled, confident, and future-ready workforce in the region.
