DM Imposes Ban on Illegal Fish Trade from Bangladesh

Shillong, January 14 : The District Magistrate of Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Mairang, has issued a Prohibitory Order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, banning the transportation, storage, sale, or distribution of fish illegally imported from Bangladesh without valid legal documents.

The order also prohibits the use of any vehicle, vessel, or boat for transporting such contraband, as well as assisting, harbouring, or facilitating individuals or groups engaged in these illegal activities.

According to the District Magistrate, the order was necessitated following reports of illegal transportation of migrants and fish from Bangladesh through various border routes, riverine channels, roads, and local markets within the state. Authorities fear that these activities not only undermine lawful trade but also pose serious threats to national security, public order, public health, and the state’s economic interests.

The administration stated that there exists sufficient ground for immediate preventive action to stop such unlawful practices and ensure strict enforcement of border security measures.

The order further warns that violators will face prosecution under Section 223 of the BNSS Act, 2023, along with other applicable provisions of law, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Customs Act, Foreigners Act, and Passport Act.
