Dorbar Shnong Lachaumiere Clarifies Official Spelling of Locality Name

Shillong, January 22 : The Dorbar Shnong Lachaumiere, in its General Meeting held at All Saints Hall, has officially reaffirmed that the correct name of the locality is “Lachaumiere” — derived from the French term La Chaumière, meaning “The Thatched Roof.”

The resolution was passed to preserve the historical and cultural identity of the area, following repeated instances of the locality’s name being misspelled as “Lachumiere” in official documents, correspondence, and signboards.

In an official notice issued after the meeting, the Dorbar stated that the name Lachaumiere carries a deep historical significance, reflecting the true heritage and charm of the locality. The incorrect spelling, it observed, has become common in several applications and government records, leading to confusion and dilution of the locality’s original name.

The Dorbar Shnong has therefore requested all residents to:

  • Use the correct spelling Lachaumiere in all forms, addresses, applications, and signages.
  • Inform and educate family members and neighbours about the correct spelling and meaning of the name.
  • Take pride in preserving and sharing the true cultural heritage of the locality.

The notice further states that going forward, any application or document bearing the incorrect spelling “Lachumiere” will not be accepted by the Dorbar Shnong.

The Dorbar reiterated that the clarification aims to ensure that future generations recognise and uphold the authentic name and identity of the locality.

The notice was issued under the authority of the Dorbar Shnong Lachaumiere as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain the cultural integrity and community pride of one of Shillong’s most historic neighbourhoods.
