Shillong, January 12 : The Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, has issued a traffic advisoryurging strict compliance with road discipline measures to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety in Shillong.
No-Parking Zones: Violators Face Fines, Towing : Police said parking is strictly prohibited along designated No-Parking stretches and busy corridors. Vehicles found violating no-parking rules will face penal action under the MV Act, including fines (₹500 and ₹1,500 for subsequent offences / up to ₹2,000) and towing.
Taxis Told to Use Only Designated Stands : All local and tourist taxis have been directed to park only at designated taxi stands or authorised parking areas. Roadside parking, parking in no-parking zones, or unauthorised locations will invite strict action, with penalties including ₹500 and ₹1,500 for subsequent offences / up to ₹2,000.
Rash Overtaking, Zig-Zag Riding Prohibited; Helmets Mandatory : The advisory bans rash and unsafe overtaking, especially in congested areas, curves, junctions and narrow roads. Drivers have been asked to follow lane discipline and traffic signals at all times.
Two-wheeler riders have been instructed to avoid zig-zag riding, over-speeding, and any dangerous or reckless driving. Helmets are mandatory, police said, warning that violators will be booked under relevant MV Act provisions with penalties including ₹2,000 / ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 for subsequent offences / ₹1,000.
Uncovered Hay/Load Vehicles Barred Within City Limits : Police also prohibited the movement of vehicles carrying hay, straw or similar materials without proper covering within city limits. Loads must be securely covered and fastened, with violators liable to penalties including ₹2,000.
Drunk Driving: ₹10,000 Fine or Jail Up to Six Months : : Reiterating strict action against drunk driving, police said anyone found driving under the influence of alcohol exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood will be punishable under Section 185 of the MV Act, carrying a fine of ₹10,000 or imprisonment up to six months, or both.
Vivek Syiem, IPS, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, appealed to vehicle owners, transport operators and commuters to cooperate wirth the Traffic Police for safe and orderly movement of traffic.
