Shillong, September 21 : Retired IPS officer and BJP Meghalaya chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang has warned the public about a fake Facebook account created in his name and allegedly being used to seek WhatsApp numbers, solicit money and promote unsolicited sales.
In a press statement, Kharkrang said this was the fourth instance of an account being created to impersonate him on the social-media platform.
He clarified that he never requests people’s WhatsApp numbers through Facebook and does not use his personal account for business transactions. He also stressed that he never seeks monetary assistance from anyone.
Kharkrang appealed to the public to report any such request received from an account bearing his name to the nearest police station.
He said an FIR had already been lodged and urged people to remain vigilant, saying public alertness would help the police act against those responsible for the impersonation.
