Shillong, September 21: The Meghalaya Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) arrested two persons and seized 40.12 grams of heroin, valued at approximately ₹7 lakh in the illicit market, during an operation at Pynthorumkhrah in Shillong.
Acting on intelligence about narcotics allegedly being transported from Silchar in Assam to Shillong for delivery, ANTF personnel were deployed at strategic locations in the area.
During the operation, the team intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number ML-05-AD-1301 at Pynthorumkhrah.
The occupants were identified as Jamir Hussain Laskar, a resident of Pangram in Cachar district, Assam, and Joy Ryntathiang, a resident of Umkdait, Nongmensong, Shillong.
According to the ANTF, a search of the vehicle and its occupants led to the recovery of four soap boxes containing a substance suspected to be heroin. The substance subsequently tested positive for heroin and weighed 40.12 grams.
The contraband was seized and the two accused were arrested after completing the required legal formalities under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended destination of the contraband and identify others allegedly connected to the trafficking network.
