Shillong, April 28: The Shillong Traffic Police has issued a public advisory stating that the use of fancy and modified vehicle number plates is illegal and violates provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
According to the advisory, all vehicles must strictly adhere to the standard format prescribed by law, which includes black lettering on a white background for private vehicles and black lettering on a yellow background for commercial vehicles. Authorities also emphasized that number plates must maintain the approved size and design specifications, with font size for four-wheelers required to be 65 mm in height.
The police have clarified that any form of customization—such as decorative fonts, symbols, additional colors, altered spacing, or stylized designs—is not permitted. Plates bearing names, symbols like crowns or wings, or altered alphanumeric formats have been declared illegal.
Officials warned that vehicles found using non-standard or modified number plates will face enforcement action. The move is part of ongoing efforts to ensure uniformity, improve identification of vehicles, and enhance road safety and law enforcement across the city.
Motorists have been urged to comply with the regulations and replace any non-conforming number plates at the earliest to avoid penalties.
