First Hill Myna Media Conclave Highlights Importance of Ground Reporting in Northeast India

Shillong, October 10: The inaugural Hill Myna Media Conclave 2026 brought together journalists, media professionals, government officials, students and emerging voices in Shillong to discuss the importance of accuracy, verification, ethics and on-ground reporting in journalism. Organised by Hill Myna Magazine, published by Hill Myna Media Pvt. Ltd., the conclave was held on October 7 at the Moreau Institute of Integral Training and Research Society under the theme “On-Ground Reporting in Northeast India.” The event focused on the role of field reporting in strengthening credibility, providing context and ensuring that multiple perspectives are represented in news stories.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, who attended as chief guest, stressed the responsibility of journalists to provide information that the public needs to know, rather than merely reporting what people want to hear.

Senior Deputy Editor of The Hindu, Soma Basu, said “Commitment to authenticity is a basic requirement for every journalist, and this authenticity comes from ground reporting. When you go to the field, you get multiple voices and different perspectives. Ground reporting builds the architecture of credibility and lends a true voice to every story.”

Journalist Michaeljit Yumnam said being present on the ground enables reporters to understand what actually happened and communicate the ground reality more accurately to the public.

Imkonglemba Ao, Principal Correspondent with The Morung Express in Dimapur, said “On-ground reporting means being physically present in the field, rather than relying on phone calls or third-party sources.” He said that it means being there and being aware of the ground scenario, while cross-checking the various information that would circulate. More importantly, being there on the ground helps gain work experience, and hone skills, allowing the journalist to grow professionally, he added.

The conclave also featured “The Room Speaks,” an interactive audience session, along with the Northeast Writers Award 2026, which recognised literary voices from the region.

Hill Myna Magazine Director Media and Editor Lakshmi Kharkongor said “Our impact is reaffirmed through our readers and contributors who continue to find value in stories that highlight real people and meaningful change.”

The organisers said the conclave marked the beginning of Hill Myna Media’s efforts to create a platform for sustained conversations on journalism, storytelling and voices from across the Northeast. Hill Myna Media Pvt. Ltd. 6909015234 | [email protected]
