Shillong, July 29: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday stressed the need for proper drainage and flood-mitigation infrastructure in areas prone to waterlogging, while highlighting upcoming road connectivity projects expected to benefit both Meghalaya and Assam.
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said infrastructure projects must adequately address issues such as drainage systems and culverts to prevent flooding and ensure the smooth flow of water during heavy rainfall. He said the authorities have already taken these concerns into account while planning and executing development works.
Referring to a proposed six-lane ring road in Assam, Tynsong said the project would also benefit Meghalaya by improving regional connectivity. He revealed that Meghalaya is planning to develop a speed corridor from Sonapur towards Silchar, which is expected to pass through Ri-Bhoi district and integrate with the broader road network in the region.
On recurring concerns over flooding in Assam and allegations that runoff from Meghalaya contributes to the problem, Tynsong said such issues should not be viewed through the lens of blame. He pointed out that Meghalaya is situated at a higher elevation, while Assam lies in the plains, making the flow of water from higher to lower areas a natural phenomenon.
According to him, flooding generally occurs in low-lying areas and can be mitigated through proper planning, drainage systems and infrastructure development. He added that unpredictable weather patterns and variations in rainfall intensity make it difficult to completely prevent such situations.
