Shillong, April 28: Former president of Seng Khasi Kmie (SKK), Banteilang Singh Rumnong, passed away on Tuesday morning at Super Care Hospital following a brief illness. He was 60.
He is survived by his wife, Junemonlin Jana, and four children. His mortal remains have been taken to his residence at Jaiaw Langsning. The cremation will be held on Thursday at the Jaiaw cremation ground at 2 pm.
Rumnong, son of former MLA Maham Singh, was widely known for his commitment to rural development during his tenure as Deputy Director of the State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD). He had completed his M.Sc. in Agriculture from Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, in 1992.
A prominent figure in the Seng Khasi community, Rumnong was regarded as a strong advocate for the preservation of Khasi culture, religion, and traditional values. During his tenure as Seng Khasi Kmie president, he played a key role in strengthening the organisation and expanding its activities. At the time of his demise, he was serving as the vice president of the Seng Khasi Kmie .
The Seng Khasi Kmie on Tuesday evening held a condolence meeting at Mawkhar, where members paid tribute to the late leader and recalled his contributions to the organisation.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed grief over Rumnong’s demise, stating that he was saddened by the untimely passing of the retired Deputy Director of SIRD. “Bah Bantei gave years of service to rural communities and played a very prominent role in the Seng Khasi for the preservation of Khasi culture, religion and its way of life. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace,” the Chief Minister said.
