Tura, April 28: Police in West Garo Hills have arrested a man accused of cheating multiple individuals by impersonating an employee of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL).
According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, the accused, identified as Kissan B. Marak, a resident of Ampati in South West Garo Hills district, was apprehended on April 27 during a raid conducted by a team from Jengjal Police Station. He had reportedly been absconding for a considerable period before his arrest.
Police said a case was registered at Jengjal Police Station based on an incident reported on April 10, 2026. As per the FIR, the accused visited a residence in the Nengkalgre area, falsely claiming to be a MePDCL official and collected ₹6,750 as electricity bill payment. It was later established that he was not a genuine representative and had defrauded the complainant.
During investigation, it emerged that the accused had allegedly cheated several others using the same modus operandi. Authorities informed that at least six other cases have already been registered against him in different police stations across West Garo Hills district, along with multiple verbal complaints from the public.
Police suspect that more victims may have been duped but have not come forward due to lack of awareness or information.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid making payments to unknown individuals without proper verification. Citizens who may have been similarly cheated are advised to lodge FIRs or submit complaints at the nearest police station.
For any information related to such incidents or suspicious activities, the public can contact the Police Control Room, Tura, or reach out through the helpline numbers provided by the police.
Authorities reiterated their appeal for public cooperation to curb such fraudulent activities and ensure swift action against offenders.
