Shillong, August 31: Concerned over the growing problem of littering at tourist spots, roadsides and footpaths in Sohra, the Hima Sohra Tourist Assistance Team (HSTAT) organised a one-day intensive cleanliness drive to promote hygiene and environmental protection in the region.
The campaign was aimed at spreading awareness among residents, visitors and tourists about the importance of keeping Sohra clean and maintaining its reputation as one of Meghalaya’s major tourist destinations.
The cleanliness drive was held at Mawkdok on August 29, with the participation of the Hima Sohra, Sohra Tourist Guides, Sohra Sumo and Maxi Cab, Sohra Taxi and Escape To Meghalaya. The initiative also received support from Sohra MLA Gavin M. Mylliem and Sohra MDC Titostar Well Chyne.
The clean-up operation began along the Sohra route, covering the stretch from Duwan Sing Syiem Bridge to Nongsawlia, where participants collected waste and litter from roadsides and surrounding areas.
Before the clean-up, Sohra MLA Gavin M. Mylliem, Clean Sohra Campaign chairman Alan West Kharkongngor and Dympep village secretary Lewis spoke about the importance of cleanliness and environmental protection in the Sohra region.
Meanwhile, another cleanliness drive was conducted along the Saitsohpen–Motpalong–Mawsmai–Nongthymmai Elaka route in Sohra under the Clean Sohra Campaign.
The initiative was organised in collaboration with the National Youth Climate Consortium (NYCC), 61 Battalion Girls NCC of St John Girls Higher Secondary School, Sohra, Scouts and Guides of St John Don Bosco Boys, Sohra, Seng Khynnah Catholic Mawkisyiem and the Hima Sohra Tourist Assistance Team.
Prior to the cleaning of the roads and footpaths, Clean Sohra Campaign secretary Vicky Mawnai and NYCC member Carmel Malngiang addressed the participants on the need to maintain cleanliness and safeguard the environment.
