Shillong, May 24, 2023 : Meghalaya Tourism Development Ltd (MTDC) faces objection over the re-appointment of Puranjan Das, Chief General Manager, on a contractual basis. The objection was raised by the Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), who stated that according to their knowledge, Puranjan Das, on attaining the age of superannuation on March 31, 2023, is supposed to retire from service on the said date. The objection was sent in a letter addressed to the Managing Director of MTDC, located at the State Convention Centre in Bishop Cotton Road, Shillong. The letter raises concerns over the re-appointment of Puranjan Das and calls for the Managing Director to take appropriate action.
MTDC’s decision to re-appoint Puranjan Das as Chief General Manager on a contractual basis has faced strong objection from the HYC. According to the council, the Corporation re-appointed Das on March 31, 2023, with an effective date of April 1, 2023, until September 30, 2023, with a monthly pay of Rs. 1,57,968. The option to renew his contract after the six-month period also raised concern among the council. The HYC strongly objects to the re-appointment of a retired employee and paying him the same amount of salary as during his service. The council believes that this practice will deprive deserving educated youths of employment opportunities and create a situation of non-availability of employment opportunities for other candidates in the state. The council has urged the MTDC to reconsider its decision and take appropriate action.
The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council has demanded that the Managing Director of MTDC take immediate action to terminate the contract of Puranjan Das, Chief General Manager. Failure to do so will result in the council organizing a protest against the Corporation. The council believes that this decision involves the deprivation of job opportunities for local educated and deserving youths.
