Mawkyrwat, August 10: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday held a public awareness programme at Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills district, highlighting five key demands that the organisation has placed before the Meghalaya Government.
KSU leaders, including Assistant Secretary of the KSU Central Executive Committee (CEC) Pynsaiborlang Rani, Assistant Organising Secretary Sandy Sohtun, and KSU South West Khasi Hills District President Forwardman Nongrem, addressed the gathering at Mawkyrwat Iew and explained the organisation’s demands.
Among its demands, the KSU called for the cancellation of the public hearing of Shree Cement Limited, which was held on July 31, 2026. The organisation also demanded action against the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills, as well as officials of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board.
The KSU further demanded the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, and amendments to the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020.
On recruitment, the organisation called for reforms in the recruitment process at NEIGRIHMS, in line with commitments made, and demanded a transparent and fair recruitment system, including the removal of personal interviews. It also sought reforms in the functioning of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) and District Selection Committees (DSCs), besides the formulation of Standard Operating Procedures for Recruitment Boards.
The KSU also reiterated its demand for the scrapping of the Government of India’s proposal to undertake uranium mining in South West Khasi Hills district.
The organisation said the demands were being highlighted before the public as part of its efforts to press the State Government to take action on the issues raised.
