Shillong, July 26 : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has lodged an FIR against a Twitter account by the name “Legal Rights Observatory-LRO @LegalLRO” for spreading false information and inciting religious and communal tension.
The FIR was lodged by KSU’s Legal Affairs Secretary, James H. Mawphniang, on July 26. In the FIR, Mawphniang said that the Twitter account had tweeted that the KSU was involved in assaulting priests, devotees, and other individuals at Mahadev Khola in Shillong on July 24. However, Mawphniang said that the KSU was not involved in the incident and that the tweet was false.
Mawphniang also said that the Twitter account had accused the Presbyterian Churches of hate mongering. He said that these tweets were intended to disrupt religious harmony and to instigate communal violence between communities.
The KSU has called on the authorities to take necessary action against the Twitter account and the person(s) handling the account. The KSU has also urged that the account be suspended or deleted.
The FIR has been received by the Superintendent of Police (City) in Shillong. The police are investigating the matter.
