KSU Urges PWD to Remove Pandals, Temporary Structures Obstructing Public Roads

Shillong, October 11: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the Public Works Department (PWD) to remove pandals and other temporary structures erected on roads under its jurisdiction, citing obstruction, inconvenience and safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Engineer of the PWD, the KSU said it had received numerous complaints from stakeholders and members of the public over temporary structures being put up along PWD roads.

The Union said such constructions were creating difficulties for the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians, particularly in areas where road space is already limited.

While acknowledging that pandals and temporary structures may be erected for various events and purposes, the KSU said they should not obstruct public roads or compromise public safety and convenience.

“In view of the repeated complaints, we request your office to kindly look into the matter and take necessary action for the removal of pandal constructions and other temporary structures that are obstructing PWD roads,” the Union said.

The KSU also called upon the department to ensure that proper guidelines are followed before permission is granted for such structures on public roads.

The Union said early action was necessary in the larger interest of public safety, convenience and proper utilisation of public roads.
